The practice can trace its origins back to Dr Wyn Barnly, a lady doctor who settled in Countesthorpe between the wars having been given the country end of her father's thriving practice based in Wigston. At that time it was very common for there to be small single-handed practices in the countryside and the small neighbouring villages of Peatling Parva and Peatling Magna both had their own GP. In the early 1950s she took an assistant, Dr A F Hoffler, who succeeded her as a single-handed doctor in Countesthorpe and will be remembered by many of the current practice patients, practising from his house on the Square. The village greatly expanded in the 1960s and Dr Hoffler took a partner Dr Geronwy in 1965. The present longest serving partner Dr Allen joined as a new third partner as the practice continued to grow in 1973 and Dr Wright came as Dr Geronwy's replacement (there was a doctor employed for six months in the interim in 1972).
The practice grew with the village, outgrowing its premises in 7 The Square. After a short period in temporary "portacabin" accommodation the present Health Centre was built and opened in 1977.
With the arrival of Dr Allen the practice took on a very prominent teaching role, becoming a training practice in 1976 and at the same time took medical students from Leicester University. Many of the products of this training are in practice in the vicinity and two of the existing partners, Dr Ring and Dr Browne, underwent their training here.
Dr Aram joined the partnership in 1980 and Dr Hoffler retired finally shortly after. Dr Ring joined in 1989, Dr Rashid in 1992 and Dr Mathers in 1994. Dr Browne joined on a permanent basis in 2000.
Our newest partner is Dr Gittins who joined in 2003 following the departure of Dr. Allen (after more then 30 years!) and Dr Mathers.
